There’s Americanized Italian food and then there’s real Italian food. Rosangela and Daniele Atte, who both hail from Naples, want to serve their Maple Ridge customers real Italian food — the tastes and aromas they grew up with.
Rosangela is the creative chef at Delizie Italiane, a bakery-bistro on Dewdney Trunk Road in downtown Maple Ridge, and, while she likes a lot of American versions of her native food, she cooks how she learned to as a child growing up in Italy.
“When I make food, it’s like my grandmother made it,” she says. “People think putting garlic and oregano on something makes it Italian. And, Alfredo sauce — I’d never heard of it in Italy.” Italian cream sauce, “panna,” includes peas and ham, she explains.
The food at Delizie, which includes paninis, fresh pasta, pizza, bread and specialty coffees, is authentically Italian. Rosangela and Daniel use many Italian ingredients like olive oil and canned San Marzano tomatoes imported from their home country.
The couple also offers catered Italian fare, serving at small functions like business meetings or large ones like weddings.
