For a business to be considered a community landmark, it has to fulfill certain criteria. Length of time is the first one, followed by familiarity, consistency in products and a friendly, down-home atmosphere. Al & Jan’s Fish & Chips meets all those criteria: it has been in Surrey since 1995, the Pacific cod and Alaskan halibut have been brought in once a week for years, and diners quickly become part of the shop’s ever-growing family.
“They become friends,” says co-owner Jan Wolkoski, explaining how the magical combination at Al & Jan’s Fish & Chips helps erase the barrier between diner and server. It also helps that Jan has a sharp memory for people and their orders. She says that by a diner’s second visit, she has their order down pat.
“I tell them if they don’t want their usual, you better start waving at me when you come in,” she laughs.
