Before moving here I visited Lola's several times and found the coffee shop and people all charming. After moving here I have made it my number one place for espresso, treats and occasional lunch. While it does not have the so called upscale furniture/decor keeping in mind it is a coffee shop...it does have the best beans/lattes and politeness ever! Clean, affordable and charming.
We stopped here mid-afternoon for a late lunch guided by the many positives reviews we'd found about this place online. It was a beautiful, hot, sunny day, and once inside, we were greeted by a sweltering heat. The place was so overheated and stuffy, that we rushed through the ordeing process just to get out of there again. The woman who took the order was not rude in any way, but she wasn't especially friendly, either. There was no friendly smile and warm chattiness that I expect when I frequent an independent cafe or resto. I would think that a business owner would go out of their way to welcome new faces and leave them with a good impression -- word of mouth is everything, after all -- but no, nothing. We paid and were told we could go find a seat and the food would be brought out to us. We found a seat far, far away from the stifling hot kitchen and counter area, and waited. The place was empty aside from ourselves and one other couple. When the food arrived, my initial thought was: Wow, what small portions! Then, upon closer inspection of my hot-off-the-grill panini, I wanted to revert to the 70s and ask: "Where's the beef?" There was so little meat on the sandwich, it was sad looking. It tasted okay. It was food, and I was hungry, so I ate it, but not with much pleasure. My husband enjoyed his wrap, but again, the size was on the small size. We both ordered the same soup: Mediterranean veg, or something like that. It was the soup of the day. It was...strange. I found it bland, and it was so pulpy and sludgey that I spent a great deal of time stirring it with my spoon, trying to guess the ingredients. The broccoli was way overcooked, and it almost looked and tasted like there were soggy crackers in the broth...but no one serves soup like that, do they? In any case, it was not good. We had initially been tempted to follow our lunch up with a coffee and one of the many baked goodies they have on the counter, but by the end of the meal, I was mightily unimpressed. So, we opted to leave and find an alternative place for dessert. Overall, I'd say skip it.
This is the best place in Brighton for coffe and food! Ask for Todd the owner and tell him it your first time at lolas and he'll wip you up something awesome!
