Comic book culture is on the rise, which is no doubt cause for the popularity of superhero blockbusters. In Toronto's comic stores, DC fans and Marvel newbies can get the latest issues or start a new collection. While each shop has its own unique vibe, they're all well-stocked with new and vintage titles sold by staff who are friendly, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. [Image credit: iStock.com/mediaphotos]

Get your comic and caffeine fix at this hip second-floor shop. You can spend hours browsing their selection of comics, graphic novels and collectible toys and figurines from Doctor Who to Batman. Tucked inside the store is Black Canary Espresso Bar, where you can read your new comics over a latte and a view of the bustling Yonge-Dundas intersection below.

Dr Comics

Located in the heart of Kensington Market, this bright basement shop is a treasure trove of vintage and recent single-issue comics. The friendly staff are on-hand to direct you towards particular titles and can even locate that elusive issue missing from your personal collection. Browse through racks of comics, trade paperbacks, superhero apparel and pop culture figurines.

Little Island Comics

2
323 College Street, Toronto ON M5T 1S2

Take a nostalgic trip along Bathurst Street, just south of Honest Ed's, and revisit classic tales from your childhood in this inviting bookshop. Little Island Comics, kid sister to The Beguiling comic shop, is a charming children's bookstore that carries a variety of picture books and illustrated novels for toddlers, teens and tweens.

The Labyrinth

3
386 Bloor St W, Toronto ON M5S 1X4

Despite its name, this cozy bookstore in The Annex is easy to navigate, if a little tight to manoeuvre. The floor-to-ceiling bookshelves are loaded – and well organized – with art books, graphic novels and manga. While the space isn't conducive to lengthy browsing, especially on weekends, the staff will help you quickly locate or place an order for a particular title.

In this digital culture, some still prefer the warmth and ritual of playing a full-length album on vinyl. Whether it's a mint-condition original or a well-loved second-hand reissue, there's no better gift for music geeks. Boost your hi-fi IQ and pick up a stack of wax for the vinyl enthusiast on your list.
One hundred years ago, Toronto's west-end neighbourhood The Junction was a designated dry ward, with no alcohol in sight. Although the ward lost its temperance status just 15 years ago, the Dundas West strip is already home to several independent breweries, bars and pubs. For a pub crawl or private celebration, The Junction's cozy pubs serve cocktails and comfort straight up. [Image credit: iStock.com/ Silvrshootr]
