If you see it straight on, Mystic Muffin looks like nothing special. Actually, it looks kind of sketchy.

But then you look closer and see quotes like “World’s best apple cake, must be legal eating age for a slice” and “Ask not what you can do for your tuna on pita, ask what your tuna on pita can do for you.” And you wonder if “Honest” Ed Mirvish opened a sandwich shop from beyond the grave.

Well no, but the personality behind it is just as big.

“I was the Mick Jagger of Lebanon,” says Elias Makhoul, Mystic Muffin's idiosyncratic proprietor. “Girls used to throw themselves at me.”

The name of his band?

“We were The Kidney Stones because The Rolling Stones was taken. People used to jump so hard up and down when we played music that their kidney stones started moving around, which is how we got the name.”

So, how did he go from music to muffins?

“My dad cut my career short because I was coming back late from the concerts — it was during the Lebanese Civil War and he was very worried about me. He was already in the clothing business. He had a factory, and a lot of shops in our town, so he opened one up for me.”

And so, a legend was born....

As soon as we walked in, Elias knew it was the first time we were visiting. There were lots of other people that came and went while we ate our lunch and it was obvious he has lots of devoted customers and it's no surprise - the food is delicious and Elias is a really nice guy. The best thing we had was the 'lentil and rice' which looked like refried beans and tasted wonderful. The falafel and the hummus were also excellent. Since it was our first time, he gave us both a piece of apple cake which was also very good. The place is highly recommended for both it's food (quantity and quality for a super low price) as well as for the great service. Be warned - he's only open until 5 Monday to Friday and 3 on Saturday and you don't want to miss it!

    Great lunch, crowd pleaser

Mystic Muffin is a busy lunch spot for workers in nearby offices and apartments. Food is Lebanese with some delicious baked goods to fill your sweet tooth cravings! Although the food is good - the real reason everybody comes back to the Mystic is the owner Elias. He is a funny, engaging and gregarious person. He is always behind the counter preparing your food, adding a little something extra for you to try and a free cookie for the kids. (Don't even try to pay for the cookie :) Elias remembers everybody and is very involved in the local community. The menu focuses on sandwiches, salads and soups. From falafel to ham and cheese you can get it all here! This is a lunch spot with a LOT of ambience and a good dose of goodness into your day!
