When it came time for Joan Kelly to open up her very own health and wellness spa, Starr Treatments, she was well aware of the competition. “If you check any of the spas, everyone is doing the same thing,” Joan explains. So she looked to her heritage as a way to stand out and offer something different to her clientele, blending traditional holistic treatments with a unique ambiance and feel.

Aside from the decor, which is inspired with beautiful artwork and tapestries, Joan has incorporated her culture into her signature spa treatments. For example, in the Tribal Drum massage, Joan will use strokes that mimic the beating of African drums. “I incorporated the traditional Swedish massage with the technique of the tribal drum,” Joan explains. “It’s something different and unique.”
