Definitely the best bar / restaurant in the area. Great Patio in the back and very cozy atmosphere inside. This is a designated heritage building and there are old pictures of the area on the walls which is a nice touch. The food is great and it's a mix of Italian, Mexican, American. What I like most is the open kitchen. The food is prepped in the open! It's a refreshing change from almost all other restaurants that prep food behind closed doors (makes you wonder what's really crawling in the kitchen). The Bar has good selection on tap and there is a comfortable lounging area in the back by the fireplace as well. If you are looking for something in this area, I would definitely recommend going here.
Went for a quiet coffee in "lounge"furnished with ripped couches fireplace. Despite sub-freezing temps owner refused to turn it on, lying that it was broken (but the pilot was lit). The place was empty. We ordered coffee and sat for about ½ hour with one top up each. We were charged $1.60 for four cups of coffee. Not a huge bill, but pretty high for two people ordering a cup and a half of coffee. We not told, nor were we given the choice to opt for food or decline the refill Manager refused to speak with us: he was "busy." Tried later, but he was rude and dismissive: he didn't care, it is a restaurant and no need to warn clients of the policy. We were scouting for recurring group meetings. He didn't know or care if we returned. Clearly it won't be our choice. I hope it isn't yours either. There are plenty of others nicer in the area. Owner does not respect his customers and happy to drive away the few he has rather than provide good service to see that we do. A horrible experience
I have never been treated with as much disrespect in any Toronto eatery or bar in the 20 years I have lived here. Upon asking if we could reserve seats for 15-20 for a 50th birthday party (we are not raucous pub crawlers!), we were first told to come back in 2 days so the manager had time to consult with...whom? Another manager? At that time we were told we had to guarantee a 600.00 bill(not including food). We knew this would not happen so we decided to just be like regular patrons and take our chances for seats on the date. If there were not enough seats to accommodate us on the patio, we would spread out in the dining area or the little area with the couches. We knew our guests would not all be there at the same time so that wasn't an issue. I got a phone call the next day from someone at the Black Horse who would not identify himself and was told "We don't want you". "You cannot book our patio". "You cannot come here". I asked how we could be denied entry if we were just patrons off the street - especially if we were not all arriving at the same time? Is this even legal? Then he hung up on me. Might I add, there matchbook covers say (Book your Event with us!)You can be sure the word of mouth I spread will now be far and wide. Do yourselves a favour, and patronize the local establishments that welcome your business.
This is my neighbourhood bar - I love the dark-lit atmosphere, walls hung with vintage photographs of the surrounding area and generally fantastic music selection: Cuban, African, salsa, jazz, classic rock. The service and food is usually decent - I like the pasta, nachos, non-meat options (it's a meat thing not a Black Horse thing!). *But* there is something that really grates: the guy who runs the bar - he's always around, typically in the prep area - he's creepy. The guy is super handsy with his female serving staff and he's always landing on them, close talking, hand somewhere ... it's creepy. He's a real goggler too when it comes to female diners (not in the company of men). You know the sort. It's the greasy downside of an otherwise solid community establishment.
Absolutely delicious fish, good service, beautiful little backyard patio. One of my favorite spots on Bloor.
