I went with my boyfriend to La Grotta on main for our 5-year anniversary. We were greeted and seated right away. The restaurant is smaller but very intimate. After being seated at a candle lit table we were given bread and water almost immediately. The servers were very kind, friendly, and patient. They had a large selection of wines from all over the world. We both ordered off the price fixed menus which was like a summerlicious menu- the food WAS TO DIE FOR! We were both very impressed with the flavour and the presentation.
Hmm, don't know where to start and the experience wasn't too nice so bare with me with my fragment presentation of what happened. It was a party of 13 for a friend's birthday. We got there at 8:50 and the first thing we walked in the door, we felt the indoors wasn't "properly air-conditioned". We then walked downstairs and I felt we like are having dinner at someone's basement. Upon sitting down, I found we weren't given enough menus (one fixed price and one a la carte). So we kept having to switch menus among each other, eventually I asked the waiter for more menus. There was a fair amount of food selection, and I was having a hard time choosing what to eat cause they look very simple food and the price tag just doesn't match. Anyhow, we ordered by 9:07 and was given some very plain "bread" and butter to eat until are food. It was quite a bit of wait, partially cause we were all so hungry. The restaurant was about 30% filled but we waited for our food... have more bread and waited more, have more bread and finally food came at 9:50. The food doesn't look exciting at all. Veal Parmigiana was was thin and kind of dry; it doesn't look good and doesn't taste good. The sides especially the potatoes looked like they had been nuked. My the cheese inside my ravioli in my Agnolotti della Grotta is just very dull. Pizza Fiorentina the crust wasn't delicious (like the ones that I would dump from pizza pizza). Okay, the food is at best, under average by best (or I would say lost connection with the real competitive world outside). The portion was barely good enough for an Asian like me (which is NOT usual since we didn't order appetizers already!). We were actually served with extra pasta (on the house), which was nice but that too, wasn't anything special, I'm sorry. The cleaning up was noisy. Waitress looks like she couldn't figure should she pile the plates first then put utensils on the plate. Or pile plates with utensils on top. Or should she even collect the utensils or not. Back and forth in front of me. She looked and sounded totally clueless (untrained). So after the not so impressive meal, the birthday girl was given a Tiramisu (on the house as well). If we paid for that dessert, for sure we would be sending it back. The Tiramisu won't even stand and start falling apart. The texture was disgusting. It all felt apart inside my mouth with a few tiny bits of sponge like sensation which squeezes out some rum. I can't really tell what I had put in my mouth. Bill was handwritten. Afterthoughts: I would have given one star for Services if they hadn't given us some free food (even though one was dull, and the other was disastrous). Had this restaurant NOT been in main street, I'm sure it would have gone out of business. Being in Main Street does make you think, how bad can it be or else it wouldn't have survived. But I guess occasion large party (though disappointing) bookings, and walk ins can keep them surviving. There's absolutely nothing left for this restaurant to be worth it going to. Atmosphere, quality and service. Good luck La Grotta. I am not going back again!
This is the first time that I feel the need to say something about a restaurant. We went to La Grotta yesterday and what a disappointment! First of all, the waitress was wearing flip-flops and kept tripping, then we ordered from the Summerlicious fixed menu and it was a total disaster! Everything tasted old! The soup tasted completely diluted, the grilled mushrooms tasted chewy, the ricotta was dark and tastes awfully old, to top it all off the tiramisu was complete disgusting and ancient!! I couldn’t wait to leave the place!! – Huge disappointment!!! –
As an avid fan of good food (especially Italian) I have been known to bask in the lovely and rustic aesthetics of La Grotta from time to time. I am almost a regular and thought I should post my likingtowards their food and closely woven family atmosphere. So to those who have had a miserable time or bad experience at La grotta I insist you try it again or cease the negitive comments in attempts to avert any future customers from this fine dining experience.
We found you online, took my Mom and family to have a nice mother's day meal. We really enjoyed it, tasty food, service very attentive. We ended up seating outside and enjoyed the weather. Restaurant was so busy but we felt at home and cozy at such a great day for Mom. We will definetely come back and try other items. Thumbs up!
